blocks_image_8_1 Determining Effectiveness of Deicing Materials and Procedures

Project Number: Clear Roads 06-01/WisDOT 0092-06-23
Start Date:
August 2006
End Date: January 2009
Investigator: Edward J. Fleege

Problem
State DOTs spend millions of dollars per year on snow removal and deicing activities. In order to meet level of service requirements under increasing budget and environmental constraints, DOTs need to be able to determine the "best value" for both chemical and mechanical snow/ice removal practices.

Objective

Develop testing guidelines for evaluating the performance of various winter road chemicals. These guidelines will specify the minimum equipment and data required to effectively evaluate winter chemical performance and will describe the ideal test location.

Expected Results

A portable test method for determining the effectiveness of deicers that could be used by any interested state in a variety of locations under a variety of winter conditions.
