Synthesis: Snow and Ice, 2030

Background

Changes in the snow and ice fighting industry are simultaneously challenging and promising. State departments of transportation continue to experience resource constraints and increasing driver shortages. As environmental changes and global climate flux create additional uncertainty, winter maintenance managers need to balance these challenges, find efficiencies and improve performance.

Objective

To gather information about new and emerging practices, procedures and equipment used in fighting snow and ice. Members are interested in state DOT experiences and academic perspectives on the latest innovations, trends, and hurdles in managing winter maintenance operations.

Expected Results

A synthesis report that summarizes new and emerging practices, procedures, and equipment used in fighting snow and ice within the categories of planning, equipment, materials, training, technology, and safety.
