Problem
Products on the QPL are evaluated against a set of criteria that were developed to ensure the product is safe and effective. Toxicity test results, however, are used for informational purposes only. Research and recommendations to establish acceptance thresholds for toxicity test results will provide additional and valuable information regarding the use of these winter maintenance materials and can be used to inform the decision-making process regarding their inclusion on the QPL.
Objective
The goal of this project is to evaluate the need to continue requiring toxicity information and to determine if a toxicity threshold can and should be implemented for deicing products considered for inclusion on the QPL.
Expected Results
The results of this study will be toxicity level thresholds to use for evaluating testing results, including important data points, acceptable value ranges, and appropriate indicator species. A test result template to be completed by vendors (or completed by lab and reviewed / submitted by the vendor) will be developed that specifically highlights the most important and pertinent information contained within the results. This template should provide for a clear understanding of the test results and plainly indicate if a product is within acceptable ranges or exceeds toxicity thresholds.
