Synthesis: Predictive Methods to Update Road Condition Reporting

Background

Most snow and ice states use a traveler information system, such as 511, to keep the public updated on road conditions during winter weather events. While these systems traditionally rely on field staff to manually observe and input road conditions, emerging technologies, such as automation, predictive modeling and artificial intelligence (AI), may provide more timely, accurate and efficient updates.

Objective

This synthesis gathered information on how state DOTs collect, report, and share information about winter road conditions with the public; whether states have explored, tested, or implemented automations, AI or predictive modeling to update traveler information systems; and states’ experiences with these advanced technologies, including their accuracy, reliability, and implementation challenges.

Results

A synthesis report summarizing state DOT practices and experiences with collecting, reporting, and sharing of road condition information.
